Supplemental Security Income
What is Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?
SSI, as opposed to SSD, is for those of lower income who is disabled and do not meet the earnings requirements of the SSD program. SSI makes monthly payments to people who have low income and few resources and are:
- Age 65 or older
- Blind
- Disabled
The basic SSI amount is the same nationwide (but some states have supplements available), and will adjust as the government chooses to adjust it for cost of living increases. The disability qualifications are the same as for SSD. If you are determined to be disabled and eligible for benefit, your earnings record as well as your level of income and resources will determine whether or not you will receive SSD and/or SSI.
Still have questions as to whether or not you should qualify for SSI? Contact an experienced Maryland Disability Lawyer today to set up a free consultation and discuss your claim or appeal. If you've already applied for benefits and have been denied, it is essential that you meet with an experienced Maryland Disability Lawyer as soon as possible, as there are time limits to request hearings that may result in you being required to re-start the entire process.
