Social Security Disability Insurance
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSD or SSDI) is a payroll-tax funded, federal insurance program. It is managed by the Social Security Administration and is designed to provide income supplements to people who are physically restricted in their ability to be employed because of a notable disability, usually a physical disability. SSD can be supplied on either a temporary or permanent basis, usually directly correlated to whether the person's disability is temporary or permanent.
Unlike Supplemental Security (SSI), SSD does not depend on the income of the disabled individual receiving it. A disabled person of any income level can receive SSD if he or she meets the criteria set forth by the Social Security Administration. Most SSI recipients are below an administratively-mandated income threshold, and indeed these individuals must in fact stay below that threshold to continue receiving SSI; but this is not the case with SSD. In fact, the amount of money that one will receive for SSD is directly related to the amount of money they "paid into" the system.
Still have questions as to whether or not you should qualify for SSD? Contact an experienced Maryland Disability Lawyer today to set up a free consultation and discuss your claim or appeal. If you've already applied for benefits and have been denied, it is essential that you meet with an experienced Maryland Disability Lawyer as soon as possible, as there are time limits to request hearings that may result in you being required to re-start the entire process.
