Lost Wages Claims in Maryland Automobile Accidents
One of the major topics that we address in handling personal injury cases, and most specifically automobile accidents throughout the state of Maryland concerns the payment of time missed from work as a result of the accident. When injured in an auto accident in Maryland, it is customary for the hospital's doctor to provide an off-work slip for anywhere from two days, to a full week, depending on the severity of the accident. Primary care doctors have the ability to extend this time off of work due to the time it takes you to heal from your injuries.
Clearly some injuries are more severe than others. For example, someone who fractures a hip and is unable to walk may be off work for at least six weeks, and probably even longer. The biggest question we get involving this issue is:
"How will I get paid for my time off work?"
First, Maryland Personal Injury Attorney, Marc G. Snyder will look to your Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage to begin making payments on your lost wages. If you have waived PIP, you may not be able to collect for lost wages until the end of your case. Our office will provide you with a wage and salary verification form for your employer to complete, and we will request the "off work slips" from your doctor/hospital. For more information on PIP coverage, request our free book on buying auto insurance in Maryland.
Typically PIP limits begin at $2,500 and some companies offer the ability to buy up to $10,000 in PIP coverage. You will be limited to the amount of money that remains in your PIP policy to recover for lost wages.
After your PIP is exhausted, you will not be able to be compensated for your lost wages until the END of your case, when a final settlement or verdict is reached. While this may be frustrating and sometimes confusing, you can contact Maryland Personal Injury Attorney Marc G. Snyder for a more in depth explanation of the topic. He or a member of his staff is always available to answer your questions at 410-656-9LAW (9529) or by filling out our contact form on the right.
